Texas & Northeastern Mexico, 1630-1690
by Juan Bautista Chapa, edited by William Foster
The first official history of Texas. Chapa was a Spanish government official in Monterey. This history was written in 1690. A key document of Spanish colonial history in Texas. Contains the only version of Alonso de Leon's diary of his 1689 expedition into Texas. Chapa was one of the few Spaniards who paid attention the Indian cultures. He list names and locations for over 300 tribes in Northeastern Mexico and Texas. One of the fundamental books on this time period in Texas history. A good smooth translation that is readable. A must have.
